About Original Jeet Kune Do

The Robles Gung Fu Martial Arts Academy welcomes anyone with the will to learn Oakland Jeet Kune Do – our unique “way” of martial art. We have classes for adults, teens, and kids!
This martial art teaches self-defense from a realistic point of view, in all ranges of combat.

History:
As many know, the name “Jeet Kune Do” is synonymous with Bruce Lee. It was his personal way of expression and philosophy. What many do not know is a man named James Y. Lee, who was a close friend and guide to Bruce, helped form this unique “way”. Some say James was the other “Bruce Lee” that no one knew about. While James Y. Lee may not have been globally known as Bruce was, he made major contributions to gung fu and the martial arts in general. Bruce Lee and his wife Linda even lived with James and his wife while in the Bay Area. Eventually Bruce moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career and left James and the school, only to return for closed door training sessions. The time Bruce spent with James are the times known as the “Oakland Years”. This was the birth of Oakland Jeet Kune Do.

The Family:
In the early 1960s, Felix Macias Sr. was first introduced to James Lee by the invite of a friend. He was also introduced to Sifu Al Novak who was an instructor at the school. Felix Macias Sr. was fortunate to have been in several closed door training sessions with Bruce Lee and was the only non-Chinese in the room!

Felix Macias Jr. was a young boy at this time, visiting and learning gung fu at James Lee’s home in Oakland. The Macias family maintained a close friendship with the Lee family. Felix Sr. was James’ student up until his passing in 1972. After this time, the Macias family kept training and began teaching others the knowledge that was passed on to them, becoming the “Keepers of the Flame”.
